License Agreement

Your license to use Disk Census and the census command line: what you get, what it asks of you, and what we promise.

Last updated

  • Lifetime license for up to 3 Macs. Each Mac checks in online at least once every 60 days. You pay once and get every future version, with no paid upgrades.
  • Without a valid activation, Disk Census doesn’t run. There is no trial.
  • Deletion is permanent, and you decide. Disk Census deletes only what you approve or ask it to clean, including through an AI agent. Nothing goes to the Trash, so keep a backup.
  • The sale is made through Link, Stripe’s merchant of record. Link’s terms govern the sale. We provide the software, your license and support.
  • Refunds: ask within 14 days if Disk Census isn’t as described. A full refund or a chargeback ends the license. The Refund Policy has the details.
  • The software is provided as is. Our liability is limited as far as the law allows, including for files you delete.

This is a summary for convenience. The full text below is what applies.

1About this agreement

This License Agreement is between you and Moiz, of London, United Kingdom (“we”, “us”), the licensor of Disk Census. It covers Disk Census: the macOS app, with its widget, its background monitor and the census command line that ships inside it, and this website (together, “Disk Census”).

By activating a license key, or by downloading, installing or using Disk Census, you accept this agreement. If you use it for an organisation, you confirm that you can accept it on its behalf. If you don’t agree, don’t activate or use Disk Census.

Link’s own terms govern the sale itself (see Buying Disk Census); this agreement is your license to use what you bought. Our Privacy Policy and Refund Policy are separate documents that sit alongside it. You must be able to form a binding contract where you live.

2Your license

A one-time purchase. One license key unlocks the app and census. It doesn’t end, and it covers every future version of Disk Census, with no paid upgrades, on the macOS versions each release supports. There is no subscription and no trial.

The command line is part of the app. census ships inside the Disk Census app, not as a separate download. You can see it in the app’s CLI and Agents tab and add it to your shell from there. It is covered by this license, on the same Macs as the app.

Up to 3 Macs. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use Disk Census on up to 3 Macs that you use at a time, personal or work. A license is for one person: a company buys one license for each person who uses Disk Census. Disk Census is licensed, not sold.

You may not:

  • share your license key with other people, or use one key on more than 3 Macs at a time;
  • copy, modify, rent, lease, sell, sublicense or redistribute Disk Census, or distribute census apart from the app. Adding it to your shell from the app is fine;
  • reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble it, except to the extent the law lets you despite this restriction;
  • bypass, disable or tamper with the license check, or modify Disk Census or its activation file to get around it;
  • remove or hide notices of ownership; or
  • use it to break the law or to infringe other people’s rights.

We keep every right we haven’t expressly given you.

3Activation and check-ins

Activating. Each Mac activates online once, when you enter your key in the app or run census license KEY. The app and census share one activation on each Mac, so activating either one activates both. After that the Mac works offline.

Checking in. Each Mac checks in with our license service at least once every 60 days. It does this silently in the background when it is online. If a check-in is coming due and the Mac hasn’t been able to reach us, Disk Census warns you 7 days ahead. If a Mac goes 60 days without a check-in, Disk Census stops on that Mac until it connects again. Your license itself doesn’t end; the next successful check-in brings that Mac straight back.

Without a valid activation, the app and census don’t run, except to show their version and help, to update, and to enter a key. Disk Census also stops if your Mac’s clock is set back by more than a day, until the clock is right again.

The Privacy Policy lists exactly what activation and check-ins send. They never include your files, file names or scan results.

4Moving to another Mac

A Mac keeps its slot when you reinstall Disk Census or macOS, or use another account on the same Mac. When all 3 slots are in use, activating a new Mac lists the 3 Macs that hold them.

A slot frees itself once its Mac hasn’t checked in for 60 days, at no cost. If you need one sooner, for example when you replace a Mac, ask us at support@diskcensus.com with the last 4 characters of your key and the Mac’s model. Moving a license through support is at our discretion. As a guide, we move a Mac for you about 3 times in 12 months. You can’t remove a Mac from the app or census yourself.

5What Disk Census deletes

Scanning and every query are read-only. Disk Census deletes only what you approve, or what you ask it to clean. That includes cleaning caches and other junk, removing duplicates, uninstalling apps and their leftovers, emptying the Trash, and deleting local Time Machine snapshots.

Deletion is permanent. Disk Census deletes files directly. Nothing goes to the Trash, and a deletion can’t be undone.

The decision is yours. When you ask Disk Census to clean junk, it deletes the items it rates “safe”: data it judges that apps and tools rebuild or no longer need. Items rated “review” are deleted only when you pick them. These ratings are judgements, not guarantees. Disk Census can’t know what a file means to you or to other software on your Mac, so check the names, paths and sizes before you confirm. You are responsible for what you approve or ask it to delete.

AI agents and scripts. census can be run by scripts and by AI agents. What an agent deletes at your request counts as deleted at your request: asking an agent to clean junk approves the “safe” items, and a plan you approve through an agent is approved by you. You are responsible for what you let an agent or a script do, including any automation that answers a confirmation for you.

Keep a backup. Before you delete anything you couldn’t easily recreate, make sure you have a current backup on another disk, for example with Time Machine. Local Time Machine snapshots are not a backup on another disk, and Disk Census can delete them when you ask it to.

macOS permissions. To scan protected locations, macOS asks you to grant Full Disk Access. That is your choice, and you can withdraw it at any time in System Settings. Without it, Disk Census works with what it can read and tells you what it skipped.

6Buying Disk Census

The price and currency are shown at checkout before you pay. Disk Census is a one-time purchase: nothing renews.

Link is the merchant of record. We sell through Stripe Managed Payments. The sale is made through Sold through Link, LLC (“Link”), a Stripe affiliate, and your order is marked “Sold through Link” at checkout and on your receipt. Link takes your payment, works out and collects any VAT or sales tax, sends your receipt and any refund notice, and handles payment disputes. The Sold through Link Terms (opens in a new tab) in Link’s Consumer Terms of Service govern the sale. We stay responsible for the software, your license and support.

On your statement. The charge appears as “LINK.COM*” followed by our name.

Payment details. You give your card or other payment details to Link, not to us. We never see your full card number.

Delivery. Once Link confirms your payment, your license key is shown on this website and emailed to you, with a link to download Disk Census.

Who to contact. For a charge, tax, receipt or other payment problem, contact Link support (opens in a new tab). For the software, your license or anything else, contact us.

7Refunds

Our Refund Policy gives you 14 days to ask for a full refund if Disk Census doesn’t do what our website says it does, and it forms part of this agreement. A full refund or a chargeback ends the license for that purchase, and Disk Census stops on its Macs at their next check-in. The policy adds to your legal rights, including the right to cancel that consumers in the UK and the EU have; it doesn’t replace them.

8Updates and support

Updates come only through the Disk Census app or census update, and one update brings the app and census to the same version: the census in your shell runs the copy inside the app. Nothing installs until you choose to install it. Automatic update checks are off unless you turn them on in Settings, and even then they only look. Before an update installs, Disk Census checks that it carries our Developer ID signature and has been notarized by Apple.

Disk Census runs on macOS 12 or later, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs. Each release states the macOS versions it supports. We don’t promise that a future version will support your Mac or your version of macOS.

We may improve, change or retire features. If a change materially reduces what you paid for, we’ll tell you in advance where we reasonably can.

We give support by email at support@diskcensus.com, and we answer within 48 hours.

9If the license service closes

Your license is for life, so it can’t depend on our server staying open. If we ever close the license service, we will first give every Mac that checks in a permanent activation, and release an update that no longer checks in. Macs on that update keep working without a check-in.

10Using Disk Census responsibly

Only scan and clean Macs, drives and accounts that you own or are authorised to manage. On a work or shared Mac, follow the rules of whoever manages it.

Don’t use Disk Census, our license service or this website to break the law, to interfere with how they work or with other people’s use of them, or to probe or attack our systems.

11Ownership and feedback

We and our licensors own Disk Census, including its code, design, name and logo. This agreement doesn’t transfer any of that to you.

Disk Census includes open-source software, which is covered by its own licenses rather than this one. The app’s Acknowledgements list them.

Your files, and the reports and exports you create from your own scans, stay yours. We claim no rights in them.

If you send us feedback or ideas, we may use them without owing you anything and without naming you.

Names and logos of other companies and tools, on this website and in the app, belong to their owners and don’t imply that they endorse Disk Census.

12Privacy

Our Privacy Policy explains what information we handle and why. In short, your files and scan results never leave your Mac, and Disk Census contacts diskcensus.com only to check for updates and to check your license.

13Third-party services

Disk Census works alongside services and software we don’t control: Stripe and Link for payment, Apple for macOS and its notarization checks, and any AI agents or scripts you choose to connect to census. They have their own terms, which you’re responsible for following, and we aren’t responsible for what they do.

14No warranty

Disk Census is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we give no warranties, express or implied, including of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We don’t promise that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that every scan, size, rating or suggestion will be complete or accurate for every file, volume or app.

If you are a consumer, you may have legal rights that can’t be excluded. This agreement doesn’t affect them.

15Limits on our liability

To the fullest extent the law allows:

  • we aren’t liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive losses, or for loss of data, files, profits, revenue or business, including files you or an agent acting for you chose to delete; and
  • our total liability to you for all claims relating to Disk Census is limited to the amount you paid for your license, or USD 50 if you paid nothing.

Nothing in this agreement limits liability that can’t be limited by law, including liability for fraud, for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or under consumer protection laws that apply to you.

16Ending this agreement

You can stop using Disk Census at any time by uninstalling it. Stopping doesn’t by itself entitle you to a refund; the Refund Policy explains when you get one.

The license for a purchase ends:

  • when the purchase is fully refunded, or when you open a chargeback for it; or
  • if you materially break this agreement, for example by sharing your key or bypassing the license check. Where we reasonably can, we’ll tell you why and give you a chance to put it right first.

If your key is posted publicly, we may replace it with a new one; the old key then stops working. When a license ends, Disk Census stops on its Macs at their next check-in, and you must stop using it and delete your copies. The parts of this agreement that by their nature should keep applying, such as ownership, warranty, liability and governing law, do.

17Governing law and disputes

This agreement, and any dispute about it or about Disk Census, is governed by the laws of [England and Wales], and the courts there can hear any dispute. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws where you live, and you can bring a claim in your local courts where those laws say so.

Please write to us first. Most problems get sorted out faster that way.

The sale itself, including payment, tax and refund processing by Link, is governed by the Sold through Link Terms (opens in a new tab), which have their own rules on law and disputes.

18Changes to this agreement

We may update this agreement, for example when Disk Census or the law changes. The “Last updated” date at the top shows the current version. If a change is significant, we’ll give reasonable notice, for example on this site or by email to people who have bought a license.

Changes apply from the day they are posted and don’t reach back to anything that already happened. A change never takes away the lifetime license you already bought. If you don’t accept a change, stop using Disk Census. If you carry on, you accept the updated agreement.

19General

This agreement, with the Privacy Policy and Refund Policy and, for the sale itself, the Sold through Link Terms, is the whole agreement about Disk Census. If a part is found unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we don’t enforce a right straight away, we haven’t given it up. You can’t transfer your rights under this agreement without our written consent; we may transfer ours as part of a sale or reorganisation of our business.
